Ron W. Waeckerlin, MDRon Waeckerlin, M.D., Chairman, Board of Trustees

Dr. Waeckerlin earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Wyoming and graduated from the University of Utah College of Medicine. His residency and fellowship in pathology were completed at the University of New Mexico, where he focused on forensic pathology. He has practiced anatomic, clinical and forensic pathology for over 40 years and served as medical director for United Blood Services in Cheyenne from 1989 to 2009. He has served on the Blood Systems Board since 2008 and retired from active medical practice in 2015.

David GreenDavid Green, President & Chief Executive Officer

Prior to being named President & CEO of Blood Systems in 2017, Mr. Green headed up the Blood Services division for three years. Mr. Green spent 14 years as President and CEO of the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center in Davenport, Iowa. A leader in the national blood banking community, he has served as chairman of Blood Centers of America and president of America’s Blood Centers. He is an Army veteran and received a bachelor’s degree from Knox College and a master's degree from Central Michigan University.

Sally CagliotiSally Caglioti, President, Creative Testing Solutions

Ms. Caglioti joined Blood Systems in 1988 and provided leadership for Blood Systems Laboratories before being named President of Creative Testing Solutions, Blood Systems’ high-volume donor testing laboratories. Ms. Caglioti was awarded the America’s Blood Centers Thomas F. Zuck Lifetime Achievement Award for her leadership role in the national implementation of nucleic acid testing. Formerly the Director of Technical Services at the Oklahoma Blood Institute, she has served on the AABB Board of Directors and the board of Group Services for America’s Blood Centers.

Linda MatthewsLinda Matthews, President, BioCARE

Ms. Matthews joined the BioCARE division in 2001, and under her leadership BioCARE sales have increased by nearly 1500%. Ms. Matthews has cultivated a culture that is steeped in customer and patient care that includes high touch and highly responsive customer service. BioCARE’s business model has allowed for success in both the acute and non-acute market segments and resulted in contracts with the nation’s three largest Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs) which will fuel BioCARE’s continued growth and expansion into the foreseeable future. Ms. Matthews has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC and a Master of Business Administration from Emory University, Atlanta, GA.

Robert Van TuyleRobert Van Tuyle, President, Blood Services

Most recently President of the Blood Services West division, Mr. Van Tuyle previously served as CFO and then President & CEO of BloodSource in Sacramento. A CPA, Mr. Van Tuyle has over 20 years of experience in executive management and has served on the boards of America’s Blood Centers, the International Plasma Fractionation Association and the National Blood Foundation, among others.

Mary Beth BassettMary Beth Bassett
Executive Vice President, Chief Quality Officer

Ms. Bassett joined Blood Systems in 1996 after serving the blood banking industry since 1976 in varying capacities. She is a former President of the Gateway Community Blood Program and CEO of the American Red Cross National Testing Laboratory, both in St. Louis, MO. Ms. Bassett has a BS in Microbiology from South Dakota State University and a Medical Technologist degree from St. Joseph Hospital School of Medical Technology, Sioux City, Iowa.

Tanya PerryTanya Perry, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer

Ms. Perry joined Blood Systems in 2017, and brings more than 20 years of diverse financial leadership experience, most recently in an executive leadership role with a large Phoenix nonprofit. In her role as CFO, she directs the financial strategies of the organization and oversees the accounting and finance functions, risk management, supply chain, and internal audit. She is a licensed CPA, and holds an executive MBA from Arizona State University.

Bhavi ShahBhavi Shah, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Assistant Secretary

As a member of Executive Management, Ms. Shah oversees the Legal Department and is responsible for areas of legal compliance and for providing legal counsel to executives and governing boards on mergers and acquisitions, governance, strategic planning, operations, human resources, regulatory compliance, risk management, intellectual property and litigation. Prior to joining Blood Systems, Ms. Shah served as Assistant General Counsel at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Associate Counsel at Cold Stone Creamery and worked at the law firm of Snell & Wilmer, LLP. She received her J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law and belongs to the American Health Lawyers Association, the Association of Corporate Counsel and the Arizona Association of Corporate Counsel.

Medical Leadership

Dr. Ralph R. Vassallo, Jr.Ralph R. Vassallo, Jr., M.D., Executive Vice President, Chief Medical & Scientific Officer

Dr. Vassallo oversees medical direction in the areas of donor suitability and donor care, the clinical services and consultation we provide to hospitals, and initiatives at Blood Systems Research Institute. Previously, Dr. Vassallo was the Chief Medical Officer of the American Red Cross Blood Services’ East Division, having served in various Red Cross medical leadership roles for 12 years. He received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Michael BuschMichael P. Busch, M.D., Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Research & Scientific Affairs; Director, Blood Systems Research Institute

Dr. Busch is one of the world’s leading transfusion medicine scientists, well-regarded for his ground-breaking work in such transfusion-transmitted diseases as HIV and West Nile virus and protection of the nation’s blood supply from these and other emerging pathogens. In addition to his leadership as Director of the Blood Systems Research Institute, Dr. Busch is a member of the Transfusion Transmitted Diseases Committee of the AABB, the Research and Development Advisory Committee of the Canadian Blood Services, and several World Health Organization panels.
