John LewisJohn Lewis, Chairman, Board of Trustees

Mr. Lewis is the former President and CEO of Commerce Bank of Arizona. He has extensive experience in managing global and national businesses and among his many skills are strategic planning, financial management and operations. Mr. Lewis has served on the Blood Systems board since 1999 and has also served on the boards for Capitol Bancorp and Scottsdale Healthcare, Inc. He has also served with the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce and the Fiesta Bowl.

J. Daniel ConnorJ. Daniel Connor, President & Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Connor has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Blood Systems since 1995. His prior executive experience was with American Red Cross Blood Services in Los Angeles and LifeSource of Chicago. A CPA, he began his blood banking career in 1973 as administrator of North Suburban Blood Center, also in Chicago. He is a past president of AABB (formerly the American Association of Blood Banks) and serves on the National Blood Foundation Board of Directors.

Sally CagliotiSally Caglioti, President, Creative Testing Solutions

Ms. Caglioti joined Blood Systems in 1988 and provided leadership for Blood Systems Laboratories before being named President of Creative Testing Solutions, Blood Systems’ high-volume donor testing laboratories. Ms. Caglioti was awarded the America’s Blood Centers Thomas F. Zuck Lifetime Achievement Award for her leadership role in the national implementation of nucleic acid testing. Formerly the Director of Technical Services at the Oklahoma Blood Institute, she has served on the AABB Board of Directors and the board of Group Services for America’s Blood Centers.

David GreenDavid Green, President, Blood Services

Mr. Green came to head up Blood Services in 2014 after serving for 14 years as President and CEO of the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center in Davenport, Iowa. Prior to the MVRBC, he was in various executive positions with the American Red Cross. A leader in the national blood banking community, Mr. Green has served as chairman of Blood Centers of America and president of America’s Blood Centers. An Army veteran, he received a bachelor’s degree from Knox College and a master's degree from Central Michigan University.

Linda MatthewsLinda Matthews, President, BioCARE

Ms. Matthews joined the BioCARE division in 2001, and under her leadership BioCARE sales have increased by nearly 1500%. Ms. Matthews has cultivated a culture that is steeped in customer and patient care that includes high touch and highly responsive customer service. BioCARE’s business model has allowed for success in both the acute and non-acute market segments and resulted in contracts with the nation’s three largest Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs) which will fuel BioCARE’s continued growth and expansion into the foreseeable future. Ms. Matthews has a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC and a Master of Business Administration from Emory University, Atlanta, GA.

Susan BarnesSusan Barnes, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer

Ms. Barnes joined Blood Systems in 1991 and has been the CFO since 1994. Her previous positions were held in the for-profit arena as CFO for Weight Loss Clinics of America, Corporate Controller for Forecast Lighting and Budget Administrator for a St. Paul insurance company. Ms. Barnes has a BS in Accounting from Robert Morris University, Pittsburgh, PA and an Executive MBA from Arizona State University.

Mary Beth BassettMary Beth Bassett
Executive Vice President, Chief Quality Officer

Ms. Bassett joined Blood Systems in 1996 after serving the blood banking industry since 1976 in varying capacities. She is a former President of the Gateway Community Blood Program and CEO of the American Red Cross National Testing Laboratory, both in St. Louis, MO. Ms. Bassett has a BS in Microbiology from South Dakota State University and a Medical Technologist degree from St. Joseph Hospital School of Medical Technology, Sioux City, Iowa.

Bhavi ShahBhavi Shah, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Assistant Secretary

As a member of Executive Management, Ms. Shah oversees the Legal Department and is responsible for areas of legal compliance and for providing legal counsel to executives and governing boards on mergers and acquisitions, governance, strategic planning, operations, human resources, regulatory compliance, risk management, intellectual property and litigation. Prior to joining Blood Systems, Ms. Shah served as Assistant General Counsel at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Associate Counsel at Cold Stone Creamery and worked at the law firm of Snell & Wilmer, LLP. She received her J.D. from the University of Kansas School of Law and belongs to the American Health Lawyers Association, the Association of Corporate Counsel and the Arizona Association of Corporate Counsel.

Medical Leadership

Dr. Ralph R. Vassallo, Jr.Ralph R. Vassallo, Jr., M.D., Executive Vice President, Chief Medical & Scientific Officer

Dr. Vassallo oversees medical direction in the areas of donor suitability and donor care, the clinical services and consultation we provide to hospitals, and initiatives at Blood Systems Research Institute. Previously, Dr. Vassallo was the Chief Medical Officer of the American Red Cross Blood Services’ East Division, having served in various Red Cross medical leadership roles for 12 years. He received his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Michael BuschMichael P. Busch, M.D., Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Research & Scientific Affairs; Director, Blood Systems Research Institute

Dr. Busch is one of the world’s leading transfusion medicine scientists, well-regarded for his ground-breaking work in such transfusion-transmitted diseases as HIV and West Nile virus and protection of the nation’s blood supply from these and other emerging pathogens. In addition to his leadership as Director of the Blood Systems Research Institute, Dr. Busch is a member of the Transfusion Transmitted Diseases Committee of the AABB, the Research and Development Advisory Committee of the Canadian Blood Services, and several World Health Organization panels.
